First to produce carbon-neutral ammonium nitrate in Latin America

In November 2023, our Cachimayo plant in Peru will produce carbon-neutral ammonium nitrate. To understand this milestone, we spoke to Patricia Valenzuela, VP of People & Sustainability.

How was the desire to create a carbon-neutral product born?

Enaex has a rich history of promoting sustainability, and it is an integral part of its strategic plan. For over 15 years, the company has been investing substantial economic and human resources to safeguard the environment and ensure the well-being of future generations. In 2009, Enaex was one of the first companies to take measures toward this goal by measuring and managing the carbon footprint of its products using the GHG (GreenHouse Gas Protocol) methodology. Since then, Enaex has continued to make progress in its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint in different dimensions, aiming to achieve decarbonization. Enaex’s strategy for achieving this goal includes the production of carbon-neutral ammonium nitrate.

How is carbon-neutral ammonium nitrate produced?

The production process involves electrolysis, through which hydrogen is obtained. This hydrogen is then used to make ammonia, the primary raw material in the production of ammonium nitrate. Our Cachimayo plant near Cuzco in Peru will carry out this process. We have implemented significant improvements at our plant, including using renewable energy and cutting-edge technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the nitric acid plant. As a result of our efforts, we will become the first carbon-neutral ammonium nitrate producer with a fully integrated production chain.

What are the other projects that allow us to reduce our carbon footprint?

We at the Prillex America Mejillones plant in Chile are committed to reducing emissions related to the production of ammonium nitrate. We have collaborated closely with our supplier to import certified clean ammonia from international sources to achieve this. By using this clean ammonia, we aim to decrease the environmental impact of our manufacturing process.

Engie is working with the company to replace 100% of their input with local ammonia production from green hydrogen and renewable energy in the “HyEX – Ammonia Synthesis” project.

As the largest producer of ammonium nitrate in Latin America and the third-largest in the world, we are responsible for promoting initiatives that align with our purpose of humanizing mining. Moreover, utilizing this ammonium nitrate can foster stronger relationships with our clients by providing them with a product that reduces their carbon footprint. By working together, we can build a more sustainable mining industry.
